Bring a Plate and a Mate Day
Let's make July 23rd, 2021, the friendliest day of the year!
Bring a Plate and a Mate Day is a pyramid scheme of friendliness.
Here's how it works:
First, you need to think of a location outdoors, maybe at the beach, or a river; on a mountain, or near a lookout. Make it somewhere that can accommodate lots of people, just in case!
You start the ball rolling, by inviting someone to "bring a plate and a mate" to celebrate life and friendliness. Try to make this person someone you don't know (or don't know well) - the idea is to make new friends.
Make sure your invitee passes on the invitation to someone else too.
Remember to post your event in the Members-Only group "Buddy Up!"
You'll need to have downloaded the mobile app (it's a "Spaces by Wix" app), and join the group.
On the day ....
You bring either a plate of food, or a bottle of something to drink (that your invitee would be happy to consume). You might bring something that is typical of your culture or a happy food from your childhood. If you're absolutely lost for ideas, try my shortbread. You invite them to bring something that is typical of theirs. It's all about sharing things that make us feel safe and connected.
As you all come together, make sure everyone has a chance to introduce their invitee to the person who invited them. They could have a chat about what each has in common.
Encourage guests to use their plate of food or bottle of something as a way to move around the group. People can offer food and drink to strangers in the group, and introduce themselves.
Encourage everyone to sign up on the Buddy Up! group, so they can continue to build their new friendships. It's a great way to find someone in your own neighbourhood!
